New approaches to writing deep time history

Professor Ann McGrath and fellow Chief Investigator A/Professor Peter Veth have recently commenced work on a three year ARC Discovery project which aims to forge new approaches to writing deep time history.

This innovative project will examine the history of research on Indigenous values of two highly significant cultural landscapes, Lake Mungo and the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area in New South Wales and Paraku (Lake Gregory) in the southeast Kimberley.

The inter-disciplinary team will collaborate with Paakantji and Ngyiampaa traditional owners of Lake Mungo, and with Martu and Walmajarri traditional owners of Paraku, and thereby combine Indigenous custodial strengths, skills and knowledge with history and archaeology to take up the considerable challenges inherent in notions of ‘long history’.
